Advanced Emergency Ultrasound
The advanced emergency ultrasound elective was developed by our own outstanding ultrasound faculty. We have developed a novel structured curriculum based on a flipped classroom model with the incorporation of up-to-date online content, including: podcasts, journal articles, blogs, and e-books. Content will include advanced echocardiography, ultrasound guided resuscitation and procedures. Rotators will have multiple opportunities each week to obtain hands-on bedside teaching and image review with ultrasound faculty. The advanced emergency ultrasound elective will allow resident rotators to solidify their knowledge of core concepts and applications and prepare them for the future of emergency ultrasound.
Rural Medicine at Indian Health Services Medical Centers
We have relationships with several different locations – Rural hospitals dedicated to serving Apache and Navajo County – Opportunity to practice in resource-limited area and learn more about the Indian Health services, the people they serve, and future job opportunities – Ability to explore the beautiful area and get outdoors.
Wilderness Medicine
Run by Dr. Comp, the Wilderness elective lets you choose your own adventure:
Opportunities to take AWLS course , weekly treks, option to focus on a specific area (dive, high altitude, disaster, etc) and plan training around that, teaching opportunities in the department and with medical students, curated reading list.
SEARHC Rural Medicine Alaska
Rotation based in Sitka, Alaska partnered with the SEARHC hospital. An incredible opportunity to work in a critical access hospital serving a small rural community as well as passengers from many cruise-lines who embark on the island. Not to mention you get to work in a beautiful location which you can explore on your days off in the community.

Medical Spanish in Peru
Want to improve your Spanish for patient care? Want to explore a beautiful country? Check out medical spanish in Peru! We partner with a teaching organization to provide immersive Spanish education. You will be living with a host family & other medical providers from different areas. Weekends are free so you can truly explore Peru. Depending on your starting level, you can also work at the ED in Trujillo, Peru.
Medical Spanish at COPA
If you are interested in improving your spanish but not wanting to leave Phoenix, you can also do medical spanish online! We use an online software with option to shadow our interpreters at Copa and get their insight into our specific patient population.
EMS
The EMS elective offers several experiences to choose from, including:
Ride-alongs with Phoenix Fire Department of Maricopa Ambulance, fly alongs with fixed wing or helicopter air crews, quality assurance activities with Air Methods (flight) or Phoenix Fire (ground), providing continuing education to the Phoenix Fire or other crews in rural Arizona, shadowing in dispatch, technical rescue training, tactical EMS training, urban search and rescue training, community paramedicine, and learning about the incident command center.
