Information for medical students interested in learning more about our residency program!
How long is your program?
We are a 3 year emergency medicine residency program located in Phoenix, Arizona. We are the oldest residency program in the Valley.
How many residents do you take per year?
We have 16 residents per year for a total of 48 residents!

What does your program do for fun?
–Retreat: We have an annual residency retreat where we go camping for one night on the Mogollan Rim and then spend one night in cabins in Northern Arizona.
–Ultrasound Party: There is a monthly ultrasound get-together or party where the resident on ultrasound plans a fun bonding night! From Top Golf to silent disco nights we love this dedicated time together.
-Post B’s: After our shift that ends at 11pm we will sporadically get drinks or a late night snack to debrief and decompress after.
-Conferences: First year residents are all sent to SAEM, third year residents are sent to ACEP, and second years are able to go to a program funded conference of your choosing.
-COPA Lunch: We try to all get free cafeteria lunch on Wednesdays after weekly didactics to make sure we spend time together every week even on busier rotations.
-Nights Themes: There is always a fun theme for nights block selected by the residents that block!
What is your trauma split?
Trauma: We split 50/50 with our surgery colleagues. One week we are trauma survey and our surgery colleagues at trauma procedures. The following week we swap roles!
-Trauma Airway: EM Residents are always trauma airway if the patient needs respiratory support.
Do you have a longitudinal pediatrics curriculum?
Yes! In addition to a Pediatric EM block each year, we have longitudinal pediatric continuity shifts at Valleywise and Banner Thunderbird. Each emergency medicine block will allow you at least one pediatric shift. This gives residents the opportunity to see seasonal differences in pediatric pathology.
Are residents close with each other?
COPA Family forever. With 48 residents there are always people spending time together in one form or another! From pickleball, morning hikes, post-nights brunch, concerts, nights out in Phoenix, there is so much to do.
